Winter in Indiana brings its surprises, and as a drone pilot and photography lover, I live for these moments. On January 05, 2025, Indianapolis was hit by a snowstorm, and I knew it was my chance to show off the city - fresh with snowflakes using my FPV Drones.

From my home in Greenwood, Indiana, I got ready to send my drones on a mission to capture this beautiful winter scene.

Preparing for the Snowstorm

Before launching my drones, I took time to check the weather and gather my gear.

The forecast warned of heavy snowfall, with predictions indicating up to 11 inches could fall by the end of the day. I knew visibility would be an issue, so I prepped my drones accordingly.

To protect them against moisture, I covered the cameras and drones to keep them safe from the snow. I also made sure to adjust my drone settings for low-light conditions, which are crucial for capturing quality video during a snowstorm.

The Excitement of Launching Drones

With everything ready, I took my drones outside.

I launched two drones: one with an FPV (First-Person View) camera for immersive video and the other with a high-resolution still camera for stunning photographs. Watching them rise into the snowy skies was an incredible experience.

As I piloted them, the landscape transformed, revealing a peaceful white wonderland that a snow day brings.

Capturing Greenwood buried in Snow

Flying drones during a snowstorm is an exciting way to see familiar landmarks from a different perspective. I flew over the Indianapolis skyline, capturing its impressive structure set against a thick white blanket of snow.

One of my favorite sights was the vast, snow-covered fields near Smith Valley Road. The way snowflakes settled on buildings and roads was stunning. Ground-level photos just can't capture that unique view.

In each capture, I wanted to convey the calm yet stark nature of winter. Snowflakes danced in the air as my drones recorded breathtaking visuals, swirling gracefully down to the ground.

Features and Settings for Snowy Conditions

When taking to the snowy skies, there are adjustments every drone pilot should use to get the best results.

Using a higher ISO setting helped me capture images in the low-light conditions caused by the heavy clouds. Adjusting the camera's exposure also prevented overexposed images and produced a beautiful contrast that emphasizes winter's charm.

Another crucial consideration was maintaining a steady hand while dealing with wind gusts. Using GPS mode on my drones stabilized the flight for smoother footage and clearer images.

Following Local Conditions

As the day went on, I kept a close eye on the weather updates to understand the storm's behavior. The snowfall changed throughout the day, sometimes heavy and sometimes light, creating moments of poor visibility.

During clearer moments, I captured more footage and reviewed my settings to see what worked best. This hands-on experience is incredibly valuable for anyone interested in drone videography.

Adapting to changing conditions is part of the adventure of flying drones during a snowstorm. The unpredictability of nature adds to the excitement of this hobby.

Reflecting on the Experience

After spending hours capturing footage of the Indianapolis snowstorm, I returned home to review my clips. Each video felt like an artistic representation of winter's beauty, with the snow beautifully framing the vibrant colors of the city below.

Despite the cold and challenging weather, the day was a great success. It was an adventure worth every chilly moment outside.

Documenting this winter scene satisfied my creative urges and prepared me to share these visuals with the broader drone photography community.

Final Thoughts

The snowstorm of January 05, 2025, was an unforgettable day for me as a drone pilot and videographer.

Proper preparation, quick adjustments, and a willingness to engage openly with nature made my snowy mission a triumph. For fellow drone enthusiasts, I urge you to explore the beauty of nature and take your drones into the sky.

Capturing moments like these inspires us and helps tell the story of our environment and its seasonal changes.

Flying my drones through the snow, watching the transformation of Greenwood, IN and its surroundings, showed me that this hobby will continue to excite me for years.

Every snowfall will now remind me of that magnificent day spent navigating the clouds and capturing breathtaking winter landscapes one aerial shot at a time.
